ALIF LAM MIM. Alif, Lâm, Mîm.

غُلِبَتِ الرُّومُ (2)

The Romans have been conquered Les Romains ont été vaincus,

فِي أَدْنَى الْأَرْضِ وَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ غَلَبِهِمْ سَيَغْلِبُونَ (3)

In the neighbouring land. But having been conquered they will conquer dans le pays voisin, et après leur défaite ils seront les vainqueurs,

فِي بِضْعِ سِنِينَ ۗ لِلَّهِ الْأَمْرُ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَمِنْ بَعْدُ ۚ وَيَوْمَئِذٍ يَفْرَحُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ (4)

In a few years (less than ten). God's is the imperative first and last. On that day the believers will rejoice dans quelques années. A Allah appartient le commandement, au début et à la fin, et ce jour-là les Croyants se réjouiront

بِنَصْرِ اللَّهِ ۚ يَنْصُرُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ ۖ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ (5)

In the help of God. He helps whom He will; He is all-mighty, ever-merciful. du secours d'Allah. Il secourt qui Il veut et Il est le Tout Puissant, le Tout Miséricordieux.

وَعْدَ اللَّهِ ۖ لَا يُخْلِفُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (6)

It is a promise of God; and God does not go back on His promise. Yet most men do not understand: C'est [là] la promesse d'Allah. Allah ne manque jamais à Sa promesse mais la plupart des gens ne savent pas.

يَعْلَمُونَ ظَاهِرًا مِنَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ هُمْ غَافِلُونَ (7)

They only know the palpable life of this world, and are oblivious of the Hereafter. Ils connaissent un aspect de la vie présente, tandis qu'ils sont inattentifs à l'au-delà.

أَوَلَمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ ۗ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ۗ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ النَّاسِ بِلِقَاءِ رَبِّهِمْ لَكَافِرُونَ (8)

Do they not think for themselves that God did not create the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them without reason and a determined purpose? But many men reject the meeting with their Lord. N'ont-ils pas médité en eux-mêmes? Allah n'a créé les cieux et la terre et ce qui est entre eux, qu'à juste raison et pour un terme fixé. Beaucoup de gens cependant ne croient pas en la rencontre de leur Seigneur.

أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَيَنْظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَانُوا أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَثَارُوا الْأَرْضَ وَعَمَرُوهَا أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا عَمَرُوهَا وَجَاءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ۖ فَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ كَانُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ (9)

Have they not travelled on the earth and seen how the others before them had met their end? They were far more powerful than them, furrowed the earth and colonised it far more than they; and their apostles came to them with visible signs. It was surely not for God to wrong them, they wronged themselves. N'ont-ils pas parcouru la terre pour voir ce qu'il est advenu de ceux qui ont vécu avant eux? Ceux-là les surpassaient en puissance et avaient labouré et peuplé la terre bien plus qu'ils ne l'ont fait eux-mêmes. Leurs messagers leur vinrent avec des preuves évidentes. Ce n'est pas Allah qui leur fit du tort; mais ils se firent du tort à eux-mêmes.

ثُمَّ كَانَ عَاقِبَةَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا السُّوأَىٰ أَنْ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَكَانُوا بِهَا يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ (10)

Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. Puis, mauvaise fut la fin de ceux qui faisaient le mal, ayant traité de mensonges les versets d'Allah et les ayant raillés.

اللَّهُ يَبْدَأُ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ (11)

God originates creation, and then will revert it, then you will go back to Him. C'est Allah qui commence la création; ensuite Il la refait; puis, vers Lui vous serez ramenés.

وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ يُبْلِسُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ (12)

The day the Resurrection comes the sinners will be overwhelmed with despair. Et le jour où l'Heure arrivera, les criminels seront frappés de désespoir.

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُمْ مِنْ شُرَكَائِهِمْ شُفَعَاءُ وَكَانُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ كَافِرِينَ (13)

No intercessor will they have among those they associated (with God), and will reject their partners. Et ils n'auront point d'intercesseurs parmi ceux qu'ils associaient [à Allah] et ils renieront même leurs divinités.

وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَفَرَّقُونَ (14)

The day the Hour comes they will be separated into categories. Le jour où l'Heure arrivera, ce jour-là ils se sépareront [les uns des autres].

فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَهُمْ فِي رَوْضَةٍ يُحْبَرُونَ (15)

Those who believed and did the right will be feasted in a rich, well-watered meadow. Ceux qui auront cru et accompli de bonnes œuvres se réjouiront dans un jardin;

وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا وَلِقَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُحْضَرُونَ (16)

Those who did not believe and rejected Our signs and the meeting in the Hereafter, will be given over to punishment. et quant à ceux qui n'auront pas cru et auront traité de mensonges Nos signes ainsi que la rencontre de l'au-delà, ceux-là seront emmenés au châtiment.

فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ حِينَ تُمْسُونَ وَحِينَ تُصْبِحُونَ (17)

So extol God when the evening comes and the day dawns, Glorifiez Allah donc, soir et matin!

وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَعَشِيًّا وَحِينَ تُظْهِرُونَ (18)

For His is the praise in the heavens and the earth, -- and at nightfall and the time of noon. A Lui toute louange dans les cieux et la terre, dans l'après-midi et au milieu de la journée.

يُخْرِجُ الْحَيَّ مِنَ الْمَيِّتِ وَيُخْرِجُ الْمَيِّتَ مِنَ الْحَيِّ وَيُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ (19)

He brings the living from the dead, the dead from the living, and quickens the earth after it had died. So will you be brought forth (from the dead). Du mort, Il fait sortir le vivant, et du vivant, Il fait sortir le mort. Et Il redonne la vie à la terre après sa mort. Et c'est ainsi que l'on vous fera sortir (à la résurrection).

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنْتَشِرُونَ (20)

Among His signs is that He created you from the earth, and you are now human beings dispersed everywhere. Parmi Ses signes: Il vous a créés de terre, - puis, vous voilà des hommes qui se dispersent [dans le monde] -.

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ مَوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ (21)

Another of His signs is that He created mates of your own kind of yourselves so that you may get peace of mind from them, and has put love and compassion between you. Verily there are signs in this for those who reflect. Et parmi Ses signes Il a créé de vous, pour vous, des épouses pour que vous viviez en tranquillité avec elles et Il a mis entre vous de l'affection et de la bonté. Il y a en cela des preuves pour des gens qui réfléchissent.

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ خَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافُ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَلْوَانِكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِلْعَالِمِينَ (22)

Among other signs of His is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variety of your tongues and complexions. Surely there are signs in this for those who understand. Et parmi Ses signes la création des cieux et de la terre et la variété de vos idiomes et de vos couleurs. Il y a en cela des preuves pour les savants.

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ مَنَامُكُمْ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَابْتِغَاؤُكُمْ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَسْمَعُونَ (23)

Another of His signs is the night, a time for you to sleep, and the day to seek His bounty. Verily there are signs in this for those who pay heed. Et parmi Ses signes votre sommeil la nuit et le jour, et aussi votre quête de Sa grâce. Il y a en cela des preuves pour des gens qui entendent.

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ يُرِيكُمُ الْبَرْقَ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَيُحْيِي بِهِ الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ (24)

Another of His signs is the lightning He shows to fill you both with dread and hope, and the water He sends down from the sky which reawakens the earth that was dead. There are indeed signs in this for those who have sense. Et parmi Ses signes Il vous montre l'éclair avec crainte (de la foudre) et espoir (de la pluie), et fait descendre du ciel une eau avec laquelle Il redonne la vie à la terre après sa mort. Il y a en cela des preuves pour des gens qui raisonnent.

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ تَقُومَ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ بِأَمْرِهِ ۚ ثُمَّ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ دَعْوَةً مِنَ الْأَرْضِ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ تَخْرُجُونَ (25)

Another of His signs is that the heavens and the earth stay in position by His command; and then when He will call you once you will come out of the earth. Et parmi Ses signes le ciel et la terre sont maintenus par Son ordre; ensuite lorsqu'Il vous appellera d'un appel, voilà que de la terre vous surgirez.

وَلَهُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ كُلٌّ لَهُ قَانِتُونَ (26)

All those who are in the heavens and the earth are His, and they are all obedient to Him. A Lui tous ceux qui sont dans les cieux et la terre: tous Lui sont entièrement soumis.

وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَبْدَأُ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُ وَهُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْهِ ۚ وَلَهُ الْمَثَلُ الْأَعْلَىٰ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ (27)

It is He who first creates and then reverts it. This is how His law works inevitably. His semblance is of the most sublime in the heavens and the earth. He is all-mighty and all-wise. Et c'est Lui qui commence la création puis la refait; et cela Lui est plus facile. Il a la transcendance absolue dans les cieux et sur la terre. C'est Lui le Tout Puissant, le Sage.

ضَرَبَ لَكُمْ مَثَلًا مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ ۖ هَلْ لَكُمْ مِنْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ مِنْ شُرَكَاءَ فِي مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ فَأَنْتُمْ فِيهِ سَوَاءٌ تَخَافُونَهُمْ كَخِيفَتِكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ (28)

He gives you an example from your own life: Do you possess among your dependants any partners in what We have bestowed on you, so that you and they have equal (share) in it, and that you fear them as you fear each other? That is how We explain Our signs clearly for those who comprehend. Il vous a cité une parabole de vous-mêmes: Avez-vous associé vos esclaves à ce que Nous vous avons attribué en sorte que vous soyez tous égaux [en droit de propriété] et que vous les craignez [autant] que vous vous craignez mutuellement? C'est ainsi que Nous exposons Nos versets pour des gens qui raisonnent.

بَلِ اتَّبَعَ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ ۖ فَمَنْ يَهْدِي مَنْ أَضَلَّ اللَّهُ ۖ وَمَا لَهُمْ مِنْ نَاصِرِينَ (29)

And yet the wicked follow their own lusts without understanding. Who can show the way to those whom God allows to go astray? None will they have to help them. Ceux qui ont été injustes ont plutôt suivi leurs propres passions, sans savoir. Qui donc peut guider celui qu'Allah égare? Et ils n'ont pas pour eux, de protecteur.

فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا ۚ فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا ۚ لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (30)

So keep yourself exclusively on the true way, the creational law of God according to which He created man with the quality of choosing right or wrong. There is no altering of God's creation. This is the supreme law. But most men do not understand. Dirige tout ton être vers la religion exclusivement [pour Allah], telle est la nature qu'Allah a originellement donnée aux hommes - pas de changement à la création d'Allah -. Voilà la religion de droiture; mais la plupart des gens ne savent pas.

مُنِيبِينَ إِلَيْهِ وَاتَّقُوهُ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ (31)

Turn towards Him and be dutiful to Him; be firm in devotion, and do not become an idolater, Revenez repentants vers Lui; craignez-Le, accomplissez la Salât et ne soyez pas parmi les associateurs,

مِنَ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا ۖ كُلُّ حِزْبٍ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَ (32)

(Or) one of those who created rifts in their order and are divided into sects, with each group exulting in what it has (carved out for itself) -- parmi ceux qui ont divisé leur religion et sont devenus des sectes, chaque parti exultant de ce qu'il détenait.

وَإِذَا مَسَّ النَّاسَ ضُرٌّ دَعَوْا رَبَّهُمْ مُنِيبِينَ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ إِذَا أَذَاقَهُمْ مِنْهُ رَحْمَةً إِذَا فَرِيقٌ مِنْهُمْ بِرَبِّهِمْ يُشْرِكُونَ (33)

When misfortune befalls men they pray to their Lord and turn to Him; but afterwards when He has given them a taste of His benevolence a section of them begins to ascribe compeers to their Lord Et quand un mal touche les gens, ils invoquent leur Seigneur en revenant à Lui repentants. Puis s'Il leur fait goûter de Sa part une miséricorde, voilà qu'une partie d'entre eux donnent à leur Seigneur des associés,

لِيَكْفُرُوا بِمَا آتَيْنَاهُمْ ۚ فَتَمَتَّعُوا فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ (34)

So as to deny what We have given them. Please yourselves for a time; you will come to know soon. en sorte qu'ils deviennent ingrats envers ce que Nous leur avons donné. «Et jouissez donc. Vous saurez bientôt».

أَمْ أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانًا فَهُوَ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِمَا كَانُوا بِهِ يُشْرِكُونَ (35)

Have We sent down a charter to them which mentions what they associate with Him? Avons-Nous fait descendre sur eux une autorité (un Livre) telle qu'elle parle de ce qu'ils Lui associaient?

وَإِذَا أَذَقْنَا النَّاسَ رَحْمَةً فَرِحُوا بِهَا ۖ وَإِنْ تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ إِذَا هُمْ يَقْنَطُونَ (36)

When We give men a taste of Our benevolence they start rejoicing in it. When misfortune befalls them as a result of what they have done themselves, they begin to despair. Et quand Nous faisons goûter une miséricorde aux gens, ils en exultent. Mais si un malheur les atteint à cause de ce que leurs propres mains ont préparé, voilà qu'ils désespèrent.

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَقْدِرُ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ (37)

Do they not see God increases or decreases the means of whosoever He please? Verily there are signs in this for those who believe. N'ont-ils pas vu qu'Allah dispense Ses dons ou les restreint à qui Il veut? Il y a en cela des preuves pour des gens qui croient.

فَآتِ ذَا الْقُرْبَىٰ حَقَّهُ وَالْمِسْكِينَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيلِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ لِلَّذِينَ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ ۖ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ (38)

So, give their share to the relatives, the needy, and the wayfarers. This is best for those who seek the way that leads to God, and they will be successful. Donne donc au proche parent son dû, ainsi qu'au pauvre, et au voyageur en détresse. Cela est meilleur pour ceux qui recherchent la face d'Allah (Sa satisfaction); et ce sont eux qui réussissent.

وَمَا آتَيْتُمْ مِنْ رِبًا لِيَرْبُوَ فِي أَمْوَالِ النَّاسِ فَلَا يَرْبُو عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ۖ وَمَا آتَيْتُمْ مِنْ زَكَاةٍ تُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُضْعِفُونَ (39)

What you give on interest to increase (your capital) through others' wealth, does not find increase with God; yet what you give (in alms and charity) with a pure heart, seeking the way of God, will be doubled. Tout ce que vous donnerez à usure pour augmenter vos biens aux dépens des biens d'autrui ne les accroît pas auprès d'Allah, mais ce que vous donnez comme Zakât, tout en cherchant la Face d'Allah (Sa satisfaction)... Ceux-là verront [leurs récompenses] multipliées.

اللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ ثُمَّ رَزَقَكُمْ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يُحْيِيكُمْ ۖ هَلْ مِنْ شُرَكَائِكُمْ مَنْ يَفْعَلُ مِنْ ذَٰلِكُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ۚ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ (40)

It is God who created you, then gave you sustenance, then He will make you die, and bring you back to life. Is there one among those you associate with Him who can do the least of these things? Too high and exalted is He for what they associate with Him! C'est Allah qui vous a créés et vous a nourris. Ensuite Il vous fera mourir, puis Il vous redonnera vie. Y en a-t-il, parmi vos associés, qui fasse quoi que ce soit de tout cela? Gloire à Lui! Il transcende ce qu'on Lui associe.

ظَهَرَ الْفَسَادُ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُمْ بَعْضَ الَّذِي عَمِلُوا لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ (41)

Corruption has spread over land and sea from what men have done themselves that they may taste a little of what they have done: They may haply come back (to the right path). La corruption est apparue sur la terre et dans la mer à cause de ce que les gens ont accompli de leurs propres mains; afin qu'[Allah] leur fasse goûter une partie de ce qu'ils ont œuvré; peut-être reviendront-ils (vers Allah).

قُلْ سِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلُ ۚ كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُشْرِكِينَ (42)

Say: "Travel on the earth and see how came the end of those before you." Most of them were idolaters. Dis: «Parcourez la terre et regardez ce qu'il est advenu de ceux qui ont vécu avant. La plupart d'entre eux étaient des associateurs».

فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ الْقَيِّمِ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ يَوْمٌ لَا مَرَدَّ لَهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ۖ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَصَّدَّعُونَ (43)

So set your face towards the straight path before the day arrives from God which is irreversible. Men will be segregated on that day. Dirige tout ton être vers la religion de droiture, avant que ne vienne d'Allah un jour qu'on ne peut repousser. Ce jour-là [les gens] seront divisés:

مَنْ كَفَرَ فَعَلَيْهِ كُفْرُهُ ۖ وَمَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلِأَنْفُسِهِمْ يَمْهَدُونَ (44)

So that he who disbelieves will bear the consequence of his unbelief; and he who does the right will straighten out the way for himself, Celui qui aura mécru subira [les conséquences] de son infidélité. Et quiconque aura œuvré en bien... C'est pour eux-mêmes qu'ils préparent (leur avenir),

لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْكَافِرِينَ (45)

So that God may reward those who believed and did what was good, by His grace. Surely He does not love unbelievers. afin qu'[Allah] récompense par Sa grâce ceux qui croient et accomplissent les bonnes œuvres. En vérité, Il n'aime pas les infidèles.

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ يُرْسِلَ الرِّيَاحَ مُبَشِّرَاتٍ وَلِيُذِيقَكُمْ مِنْ رَحْمَتِهِ وَلِتَجْرِيَ الْفُلْكُ بِأَمْرِهِ وَلِتَبْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ (46)

Among His signs are the breezes He sends as harbingers of happy news, so that He may allow you to taste of His mercy, and that ships may sail by His command, and you may seek of His bounty, and may haply be grateful. Parmi Ses signes, Il envoie les vents comme annonciateurs, pour vous faire goûter de Sa miséricorde et pour que le vaisseau vogue, par Son ordre, et que vous recherchiez de Sa grâce. Peut-être seriez-vous reconnaissants!

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ رُسُلًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِمْ فَجَاءُوهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَانْتَقَمْنَا مِنَ الَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا ۖ وَكَانَ حَقًّا عَلَيْنَا نَصْرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (47)

Verily We sent many apostles before you to their people, who brought clear signs with them. Then We retributed those who were sinful. It is a duty incumbent on Us to help the believers. Nous avons effectivement envoyé avant toi des Messagers vers leurs peuples et ils leur apportèrent les preuves. Nous Nous vengeâmes de ceux qui commirent les crimes [de la négation]; et c'était Notre devoir de secourir les croyants.

اللَّهُ الَّذِي يُرْسِلُ الرِّيَاحَ فَتُثِيرُ سَحَابًا فَيَبْسُطُهُ فِي السَّمَاءِ كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ وَيَجْعَلُهُ كِسَفًا فَتَرَى الْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَالِهِ ۖ فَإِذَا أَصَابَ بِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ إِذَا هُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ (48)

It is God who sends the breezes that raise clouds, then spreads them over the sky as He please, fold on fold, then you see the drops of rain issue from between them. When He sends it down to those of His creatures as He will, they are filled with joy, Allah, c'est Lui qui envoie les vents qui soulèvent des nuages; puis Il les étend dans le ciel comme Il veut; et Il les met en morceaux. Tu vois alors la pluie sortir de leurs profondeurs. Puis, lorsqu'Il atteint avec elle qui Il veut parmi Ses serviteurs, les voilà qui se réjouissent,

وَإِنْ كَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ لَمُبْلِسِينَ (49)

Although before it came down they were despondent. même s'ils étaient auparavant, avant qu'on ne l'ait fait descendre sur eux, désespérés.

فَانْظُرْ إِلَىٰ آثَارِ رَحْمَتِ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ يُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا ۚ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ ۖ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ (50)

So consider the signs of His benevolence: How He quickens the earth after it had become waste. He is verily the one who will raise the dead. He has power over everything. Regarde donc les effets de la miséricorde d'Allah comment Il redonne la vie à la terre après sa mort. C'est Lui qui fait revivre les morts et Il est Omnipotent.

وَلَئِنْ أَرْسَلْنَا رِيحًا فَرَأَوْهُ مُصْفَرًّا لَظَلُّوا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ يَكْفُرُونَ (51)

If We send a (blighting) wind and they see (the earth) seared autumnal, they would surely become ungrateful. Et si Nous envoyons un vent et qu'ils voient jaunir [leur végétation], ils demeurent après cela ingrats (oubliant les bienfaits antérieurs).

فَإِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ الْمَوْتَىٰ وَلَا تُسْمِعُ الصُّمَّ الدُّعَاءَ إِذَا وَلَّوْا مُدْبِرِينَ (52)

You cannot make the dead to listen nor the deaf hear the call when they have turned back and retreated, En vérité, tu ne fais pas entendre les morts; et tu ne fais pas entendre aux sourds l'appel, s'ils s'en vont en tournant le dos.

وَمَا أَنْتَ بِهَادِ الْعُمْيِ عَنْ ضَلَالَتِهِمْ ۖ إِنْ تُسْمِعُ إِلَّا مَنْ يُؤْمِنُ بِآيَاتِنَا فَهُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ (53)

Nor can you make the blind see the way when they have gone astray. You can make none hear except those who believe Our signs and have come to submission. Tu n'es pas celui qui guide les aveugles hors de leur égarement. Tu ne fais entendre que ceux qui croient en Nos versets et qui sont alors entièrement soumis [musulmans].

اللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ ضَعْفٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْ بَعْدِ ضَعْفٍ قُوَّةً ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ ضَعْفًا وَشَيْبَةً ۚ يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَاءُ ۖ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيمُ الْقَدِيرُ (54)

It is God who created you of weakness, then after weakness gave you strength, then after strength will give you weakness and grey hair. Surely He makes whatever He wills. He is all-knowing and all-powerful. Allah, c'est Lui qui vous a créés faibles; puis après la faiblesse, Il vous donne la force; puis après la force, Il vous réduit à la faiblesse et à la vieillesse: Il crée ce qu'Il veut et c'est Lui l'Omniscient, l'Omnipotent.

وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ يُقْسِمُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ مَا لَبِثُوا غَيْرَ سَاعَةٍ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كَانُوا يُؤْفَكُونَ (55)

The day Resurrection is set the sinners will swear: "We did not tarry more than an hour (and cannot be guilty)." That is how they have always been deceived. Et le jour où l'Heure arrivera, les criminels jureront qu'ils n'ont demeuré qu'une heure. C'est ainsi qu'ils ont été détournés (de la vérité);

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ وَالْإِيمَانَ لَقَدْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْبَعْثِ ۖ فَهَٰذَا يَوْمُ الْبَعْثِ وَلَٰكِنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ (56)

But those who were given the knowledge and belief will say: "You have tarried, according to the Book of God, as long as the Day of Resurrection, and this is the Day of Resurrection, but 'you do not know." tandis que ceux à qui le savoir et la foi furent donnés diront: «Vous avez demeuré d'après le Décret d'Allah, jusqu'au Jour de la Résurrection, voici le Jour de la Résurrection, - mais vous ne saviez point».

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ (57)

Their excuses will be of no avail to the sinners on that day, and they will not be allowed to beg for favour. ce jour-là donc, les excuses ne seront pas utiles aux injustes et on ne leur demandera pas à chercher à plaire à [Allah].

وَلَقَدْ ضَرَبْنَا لِلنَّاسِ فِي هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ مِنْ كُلِّ مَثَلٍ ۚ وَلَئِنْ جِئْتَهُمْ بِآيَةٍ لَيَقُولَنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلَّا مُبْطِلُونَ (58)

We have offered every kind of example here in this Qur'an to men. Even then if you bring a verse to them, those who disbelieve say: "You are nothing but a liar." Et dans ce Coran, Nous avons certes cité, pour les gens, des exemples de toutes sortes. Et si tu leur apportes un prodige, ceux qui ne croient pas diront: «Certes, vous n'êtes que des imposteurs».

كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (59)

That is how God seals the hearts of those who do not know. C'est ainsi qu'Allah scelle les cœurs de ceux qui ne savent pas.

فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ ۖ وَلَا يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَ الَّذِينَ لَا يُوقِنُونَ (60)

So have patience. The promise of God is surely true; and let not those who do not believe make you relax (your endeavours). Sois donc patient, car la promesse d'Allah est vérité. Et que ceux qui ne croient pas fermement ne t'ébranlent pas!
